The evening of Sunday, November 11, 2012, will be memorable for La Cañada and the surrounding communities. Come to Flintridge Bookstore & Coffeehouse to recognize the sacrifice of those lost in the wars abroad and learn more about the new book Tom Brokaw is calling a "must read for all Americans." The book was recently selected to be on the Chief of Naval Operations' reading list for 2013.

The panel will explain how the Navy and Marine Corps reacted after 9/11 and will provide perspectives of ten years at war. The discussion also touches on the leadership attributes of veterans and their applicability both in and out of uniform.

Patrick Anderson is a member of the Naval Academy Class of 2002. He was born and raised in South Pasadena and graduated from Loyola High School in 1998. After graduating from the Naval Academy, he served 10 years as a helicopter pilot, deploying three times to the Middle East. He recently resigned his commission and is now back in Southern California, with his wife and young son, to begin a career in commercial real estate.

Anita Brenner is a co-author of the book and leads outreach efforts for much of the country. She practices law in Pasadena, CA, and writes a weekly column for the La Canada Valley Sun. She is a member of the Los Angeles County Bar Association Armed Forces Committee and a past president of the La Canada Thursday Club. Her son, 2LT Andrew Torres, USMC, was a 1998 graduate of Flintridge Preparatory School and a member of the U.S. Naval Academy Class of 2002, who served in the U.S. Marine Corps until his death from cancer in 2004.

Lt. Col. Rabbi Gilbert Kollin, USAF (retired), is the rabbi emeritus of Pasadena Jewish Temple & Center, a past president of the Board of Rabbis of Southern California, a chaplain for the Pasadena Police Department and City of Hope, and member of the Advisory Board of the Los Angeles Chapter of the American Jewish Committee. Rabbi Kollin continues to consult, write and lecture. Rabbi Kollin is quoted in the book.
