Luke's Wings

"My fiancé Jessie is a double amputee above the knee. He was injured in Afghanistan Oct. 17, 2011. We first heard about Luke's Wings through their No Soldier Spends Christmas Alone Campaign 2011. We were able to fly home for Christmas with family and friends instead of in a hospital room. Since then, the organization has flown us several times, including a surprise birthday visit to Jessie's 9 year old brother, who had not seen Jessie since before he was deployed. We're very grateful for what they do, not only for us, but for the many other families that have been impacted by their flights and also their friendship. Jessie and I are so proud to be a part of the Luke's Wings Family!! I recommend Luke's Wings to all the new families at the hospital."

You can help support the mission of Luke's Wings by purchasing a copy of In the Shadow of GreatnessProceeds from the sale of the book will go directly to Luke’s Wings "No Soldier Spends Christmas Alone" campaign to help over 1,500 wounded warriors spend Christmas with their families this year.

Luke's Wings is a 501(3)c non-profit dedicated to the support of service members who have been wounded in battle. By reuniting these wounded warriors with their loved ones, Luke's Wings provides an immediate and invaluable service to the families of our men and women at arms while also helping to encourage and motivate the service member’s recovery. With your help, we will be able to approve 100% of the flight requests we receive this holiday season, as we cannot imagine what it would be like to be alone in the hospital on Christmas morning.

When a service member enters a military hospital, it can be a scary and confusing time. Initially, they are provided with three airline tickets for family use. When the family goes home, or after they use those three plane tickets, their coverage is over. Often times, a parent will sit by the bedside because they know they cannot afford to come back…basically walking away from the rest of the family to care for the warrior as their “non-medical attendant”. This can create a huge ripple effect, not only on the family economically, but also on the family unit. Children can be separated from their parent for up to 3-4 years while the wounded warrior recovers, parents may lose their jobs, and loved ones suffer because they cannot afford to be at the bedside, even for a short visit.

Luke’s Wings bridges the gap between what the family receives as a benefit and what they actually need. We provide complimentary airline tickets for immediate travel emergency flights, as well as long term rotation plans to ensure our heroes are never without their loved ones during their most difficult times. We have built our rolodex of wounded soldiers and veterans over the last four years.  Additionally, we have created nationwide networks with military hospitals, veteran service providers, military families and, more recently, with the national media.

In April, we were honored by the Joining Forces Community Challenge, an initiative created by Michelle Obama and Dr. Jill Biden, as one of the top twenty nonprofits assisting military families in the nation.

So far through 2012, Luke’s Wings has reunited more than 500 wounded warriors with their families during their recovery as well as World War II veterans in hospice care during their final hours. In order to continue providing these important flights, we launched our “No Soldier Spends Christmas Alone” campaign. Based on what we were able to achieve last year, we hope to raise $500,000 by December 25th.  We want to approve 100% of the flights we receive this holiday season as we cannot imagine how it would be to be alone in the hospital on Christmas morning. Your purchase today will help us keep our wounded warriors, veterans and their families flying. We are grateful for your support!
